We'll be driving from DFW to get there so would it be best to leave early or does it not matter? Would my Subaru Forester/friend's Jeep Liberty/pickup be ok driving down the beach to the campsite? Kind of stupid question but I'd like to know the driving conditions most of the year and how soft the sand is. What lives there that'll take our food if we're not careful? I saw a post on r/camping about coyotes, those prominent and should we worry? Is there a limit to people? Just in case someone tags along and 8 is the limit or something. Is it backpacking or can we camp out of the car? (Only 3 out of 8 of us have backpacked before, and while I have no issues with that the others might) I was thinking the south island since it's more spread out, are campsites just pick a spot? How is it there camping quality wise, average temps during winter and whatnot? I see that it's free with permits and reservations are needed the day of etc (with the $20 vehicle fee that is), any limitations I should know about? (We're all 16-22 by the way) I have a few questions having never camped there before. Since none of them can take actual snow (they've lived in Texas forever and I don't think have ever camped in anywhere above 1500 feet) I was thinking Padre Island. ![]() So being my friend group's experienced camper with enough time to plan I'm in charge of scheduling a campout for the winter months.
